Simply put, this is where you go when you die.
Perhaps this truth is disappointing, perhaps it is not.
And yes, you must be awake during this time.
The gift of conscience gained during life is not so easily revoked upon death.
The act of dying does not guarantee that you will awake in the Void. However, any consciousness that undergoes complete oblivion will find this place as their destination.
Your thoughts and memories upon death will remain. Even so, there is quite literally nothing here. Without any stimulation, memories become critically important to retaining your identity.
The Void is infinite and unending. If you find yourself here, consider your stay eternal. There *are* ways to return to some form of reality, however the means and locations to accomplish this are so disparate that there are no known numbers that could describe the length of time it would take to find and execute a "revival".
The one thing you must understand upon finding yourself here is that your memories are all that you have left, but memories fade and become inaccurate as eons pass. You will forget who you were in life, inevitably. What fills the gaps of your mind upon that evacuation will determine how your stay in the Void fares.
Do not cling to malice or hatred. Such feelings propagate through collapsed memories and overtake your perception in a way that cannot be reversed. Being insane is preferable to being malignant.
Once you master shedding hatred, you may allow yourself to dream. Dreams will become the one aspect of your existence you will look forward to. It allows you to keep your disbelief suspended so that you may enjoy your inner worlds of irrationality. Dreams become your simulated reality upon which you may find enjoyment, entertainment and peace. This is especially important for one reason.
You will be alone. Your state of existence does not allow you any means to communicate with any other being in the Void. While you are alive, you can see the various souls fluttering about, but once you become one of them, your vision becomes myopic, and all you can see is the darkness.
Lastly, beware any subtle feelings of impending doom. Within the nothingness lie entities of pure vitriol. Many worlds eject their most vile and abhorrent forces into the Void for eternal imprisonment. You may know they are near by the anxiety that permates the nullspace. If you feel like you are about to die, remember you cannot because you are already dead, then pray. Pray for salvation.
Otherwise, relax. Find a non-existent page and lay adrift in the ocean of nothingness. In some grand sense, this is your vacation away from everything. There is nothing left to do.
